Triaxial Compression on Semi-solid Alloys

Abstract Multi-axial compression of the mushy zone occurs in various pressurized casting processes. Here, we present a drained triaxial apparatus for semi-solid alloys that allow liquid to be drawn into or expelled from sample response isotropic compression. The rig is used measure pressure-dependent flow stress and volumetric during isothermal globular Al-15 wt pct Cu at 70 85 vol solid. Analysis paths stress–volume data show combination solid fraction mean effective pressure determines whether material undergoes shear-induced dilation contraction. results are compared with critical state soil mechanics (CSSM) framework similarities differences behavior between equiaxed soils discussed.
